Course Introduction:
The development of new engineering materials is stimulating design of a new and innovative range of consumer products. Innovation often involves replacing a component made of one material (e.g. cast iron) with another (e.g. aluminum alloy metal matrix composite), and then redesigning the product to exploit the potential(s) offered by the new material. Thus, an engineer must compare and contrast the properties and limitations of competing materials. This requires an understanding of the basic materials properties; of how these properties are controlled by processing; of how materials are formed, shaped, joined, and finished; and of the chain of reasoning that leads to a successful choice and design.

9. Course Learning Objectives:
The main aim of this course is to integrate the materials science, manufacturing, and mechanics knowledge that students have from previous courses and apply it to engineering design.
10. Course pre-requisites:
Basic properties of metals and non metals
       Mechanics, Chemistry

13. Expected outcome of the course:
Ø  Be able to describe the structure of and classify engineering materials.
Ø  Understand properties and behaviour of engineering materials.
Ø  Know about the modes of failure (ductile/brittle fracture, fatigue, creep and corrosion) of engineering materials.
Ø  Know how to use information sources to select materials for engineering uses.
